Hi Arden

:A few people have suggested this, but the main problem I see is that a lot of games use this format pk3, and Map Manager has no way of knowing which archive belongs to which game
<snipped>
:
pk3 files to my knowledge is are plain zip archives renamed from .zip to .pk3 Winrar just happens to be able to read zipfiles. So unless the info in is the zipfile comment or a setup.inf or game.nfo file contains game specific info that MM could read, then its probly impossible to know wich game this pk3 is for.

So its just a matter of knowing for wich game and the type the map is made for ?

thats easy: Association. Associate the game name in MM to a downloaded map folder.

ok, consider this: being a neat and organised player, i always place my downloads in a specific folder, 1 folder per type per game.

ex:
Jedi knigth Outcast
downloaded sp maps : F:\My downloads\games\jk2\maps_sp
downloaded mp maps : F:\My downloads\games\jk2\maps_mp
downloaded FreeForAll maps : F:\My downloads\games\jk2\maps_ffa

Return To Caste Wolfenstein
downloaded sp maps : F:\My downloads\games\wolf\maps_sp
downloaded mp maps : F:\My downloads\games\wolf\maps_mp

i'm guesing i'm not the only one to do this. Mind you, these are not for extracted files, only to download the zip archives from the various map sites.

i always download my zipped single player maps for jk2 in "jk2\maps_sp", then i unzip them into the proper folder that the readme tells me to, then launch the game.

So, knowing my zip files are neatly organised by game title and game type, i would just need to tell MM where these files are located, by association to the game name and type.

in other words: associate a game & type of map with a download folder (2 birds with 1 stone).

Example, when MM is first installed, ask

where are the "Jedi knigth Outcast downloaded sp maps" ?

i would tell it

"F:\My downloads\games\jk2\maps_sp"

MM would then know that all my single player jk2 maps are there, so when i choose to play a map, it would take care of extracting the file to their proper folders in the game folder and launch the game, simply based on the game name and type.

thats about all the user intervention it needs once its setup.

:If you look at the settings.ini file that comes with Map Manager you will see all the folder locations for the file types, but keep in mind, if the folder does not exists, then the folder will not be created, this is by default so you don
